Frank King was a new father when he was gunned down 18 years ago outside his home in Silver Spring.

In the early hours of July 2, 1993, King pulled up to his home on Dilston Road. King was new to the area, having spent most of his life in the District. Around 2:30 a.m., shortly after he got out of his vehicle, two men approached him and began firing.

King was shot three times. By the time police arrived, the 38-year-old was semiconscious, lying in a pool of his own blood.

He died minutes later before his wounds could be treated.

When detectives searched King, they found that had more than $2,000 in cash on him and was wearing diamond and gold rings and bracelets. That likely ruled out a robbery.

They also found a 9 mm pistol that belonged to King. Sources told police that King carried it in his car at all times after being the victim of an attempted murder and armed robbery several years earlier.

King had been in Thomas Circle in D.C. earlier that night when he received a page and left to meet someone at an IHOP restaurant near his house.

From there he headed home, where police believe the pair of shooters were waiting for him.

Police said King was killed over a debt that he owed. They have an idea who set him up, but police don't know who was the actual shooter.

King was survived by his newborn daughter, but the girl's mother was killed two years after King was, police said. Police found no link to King's or the woman's slaying.

Anyone with information regarding King's death is asked to call police at 240-773-5079.
